The Avenue Theater Neon Sign Lighting

Last night was the official neon sign lighting for the historic Avenue Theater in San Francisco’s Portola district. The Portola is also known as “the best little neighborhood you’ve never heard of.”

Mayor Ed Lee was part of the official lighting ceremony and there were two pristine Packard cars, on loan from the Academy of Art, parked in front of the theater.

The Portola community came out for the celebration and it means a lot to the residents to have this project completed. As the Avenue Theater sits prominently on the main street, San Bruno Avenue, it has stood as a sad reminder of a once-vibrant gathering place that has stood dark for 30 years.

After speeches by the Portola Neighborhood Association, the Office of Economic Development, Supervisor Hillary Ronen, community members and the mayor, it was time to flip the switch.

Everything went off beautifully as the mayor led the countdown 5-4-3-2-1. The neon sign on “The Ave” looks very classy and it speaks to an area that gets things done at a grassroots level. Way to go! So proud and thankful for everyone who was a part of this project. Thank you!

  1. I think placing neon lights is a great idea. It’s a good way to bring the neighborhood together, which these days seems hard to do.
